“P” is for Pincushion

January 19, 2012

A little loaf of love with this cutie pincushion!  I repurposed my girls play kitchen loaf pan into a useable pincushion for me.

Complete with a little applique heart on top.  Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any day of the year.

It’s a simple project to make – just pilfer through your kids old play kitchen or use a mini loaf pan from the dollar store.  This little metal liad pan measures about 3.5″ x 2″ x 1.25″h.
Below is how to make a loaf pan pincushion.

Step 1: Cut piece of drop cloth to fit the pan container plus an extra 2″ on all sides.
Cut tiny red heart from cotton fabric scraps.

Step 2: Hand stitch the heart in place using a needle and red thread, I went with the buttonhole stitch.

Step 3: Stitch long running stitch in rectangle shape around edge just a bit larger than the top edge of the pan. (you can barely see it here in white thread in the photo above)

Step 4: Pull ends of running stitch to gather the fabric together then stuff with polyfill.  Once full and snug tie a knot in the strings.

Step 5: Fill the base of the pan with pea gravel.  Place the filled fabric cushion down into container then hot glue around edges to hold in place.

Step 6: Glue and tie ribbon around the edge of the pan for extra cuteness.

Step 7:  Fill up your pincushion with pins!  I used these fun heart shape straight pins to celebrate the holiday.

Holiday appropriate but great for everyday use too.

I while back I saw some little pincushions in the back of vintage metal trucks that I thought were fantastic too, you would have to raid the kids toys to make that too! Happy weekend! X

Sweet pin cushion! I'm thinking of making one. I'm tired of all the pins from case sticking in my hand when I'm grabbing for one.
