This post about refreshing a Family Room is sponsored by The Home Depot. Just like humans get tired so do the spaces in our homes. Whether it’s a change of taste or function or things are just plain worn out it’s time for a refresh. Join me for this Family Room refresh with a few simple steps.
An easy Family Room refresh with paint, wall sconces, area rug and new furniture. Make the space functional for your family!
BEFORE
Let’s start at the beginning, this way you can see what I’m working with and how to refresh the space.
It hurts my eyes, does it hurt your eyes too? So much happening in this space, but we can easily fix it all. And thanks to the The Home Depot mobile app I can do all my calculating and sourcing right in the palm of my hand.
ITEMS TO REFRESH / SOURCE:
- Wall paint
- Wall sconces
- Area rug
- Sofa / Seating options
- Coffee table
- Floor lamp
WALL PAINT: PAINT CALCULATOR
First order of business is to refresh the wall paint. But how much paint will I need for this room? We can figure out exactly how much paint by using the paint calculator online or in the mobile app.
- Open the mobile app and click ‘more’ in the lower right-hand corner.
- Scroll down to ‘project calculators’
- Then scroll to ‘paint calculator’
- Enter your room measurements in the respective boxes and the app will automatically calculate how much paint you need!
For this room I will need 2 gallons of paint. My room is divided in half horizontally. I have a tongue and groove wall treatment on the lower half and regular flat drywall on the upper portion. So I’m going to get 1 gallon for each portion.
Beginning on the lower half with the tongue and groove boards I sealed the knots I used two coats of Zinsser BIN shellac based primer. Then a nice coat of Rustoleum HOME wall paint in white semi-gloss.
On the upper portion I used one gallon of Rustoleum HOME wall paint in French Linen matte finish.
Fresh paint on the walls makes a huge difference! Now let’s use The Home Depot mobile app again and source some new wall sconces.
WALL SCONCES:
The old basic bulb sconces are a little bare and I’m wanting something with more weight to it.
Using the mobile app we can:
- Search by typing product, voice, barcode or image
- Read product reviews
I started typing sconce and the app autofilled providing many options to choose from.
I selected wall sconce and it gave me 4,607 results!! Holy smokes that’s a lot of options. We need to narrow the search a bit. You can filter and sort the results using the dropdown menus in each bubble.
I filtered by color and style and now I’m looking at some great options. I scrolled down to find sconces that I loved then clicked for the product page.
Once on the product page you have many options for purchase:
- In store stock quantity and location
- Flexible delivery options
- Free delivery on over a million items
- Expanded return window
Swapping out the old sconces for the new beauties is fairly simple. Be sure to turn off the circuit breaker first!
This sconce is much more substantial and modern and I love the addition of the Edison bulb.
FAMILY ROOM AREA RUG:
Now that the walls are settled let’s turn our attention to the floor. We have a beautiful bluestone floor that is great for this lower level space but it’s defintiely cold and hard underfoot.
To select an area rug I again used the mobile app. As I started to add soft goods I made a shopping list on the app to keep track of items and costs.
- Store multiple shopping lists for each project
- Add items as you search right there in the palm of your hand
- Keep track of costs with the estimated total
- Share lists with others
I can even share this list with anyone and then they have access to all the items I’ve selected. See my shopping list right here!
For the rug I wanted something natural in a neutral color and not fluffy. I choose this natural fiber Safavieh area rug and it could not be more perfect!
I love the edge binding and it plays so nicely with the texture on the feature wall. Also I highly suggest using a rug pad.
SOFA / SEATING OPTIONS:
If you remember back to the before photo way up above we had a sectional sofa in this space and that seats a lot of people. But truth be told we never ever have that many people sitting at once so I opted for a more refined seating area.
This modest 3 seat sofa is just perfect in this spot and the color is gorgeous! The scale and size is just enough without being overwhelming yet it still fits 3 people.
It’s got simple little details like a few tufted buttons on the back and a modern rolled arm.
In addition to the sofa I added a lounge chair for more seating. It’s a nice neutral grey color and generous without being oversized.
Upon arrival all I had to do was screw on the four feet and it was ready to use. Love those front feet with the wood and metal casters.
COFFEE TABLE:
Next I added a wooden coffee table to bring in a bit of warmth and natural tone. It’s just enough counter space for when you need it (like somewhere to put your feet up ;)).
I’m no stranger to building furniture but this was so easy anyone could assemble in less than 15 minutes. This coffee table arrived flat packed and just a few screws later it was ready to go.
FLOOR LAMP:
Last but not least is the finishing touch, the jewelry of the room. With all the black metal from the sconces and door hardware I decided a brass floor lamp was appropriate.
It provides just enough light for that corner of the room and adds a touch of aged character. Love that swooping arm!
