Who’s ready for a little holiday? July 4th is fast approaching and I have a simple but easy project for your party. These DIY star napkins are quick and make the perfect touch of festive decor for your summer party table.
A DIY tutorial to make star napkins. Simple sewing and a little red paint make this the perfect party decor for July 4th.
For these napkins I used white cotton fabric but you could use premade white cotton napkins to make it that much easier. I added the handpainted red star in the center of each napkin for a nod to the Fourth of July holiday. This project would be great for any party or holiday, just change up the shape or use letters to coordinate with your event theme.
I paired the napkins with a blue and white gingham waxed paper tray liner. The aluminum quarter sheet pans make perfect individual serving trays and act like a giant plate to hold all the yummy food. You can never go wrong with red, white and blue but this makes an especially sweet 4th of July place setting.
And if you’re curious about the giant outdoor wood dining table that seats 10 then please click here for details. I built the table for our backyard patio space and it’s a great entertaining spot.
These embellished cotton napkins are fun, festive and washable too! Down below I’ll you how to make the star napkins.
Supplies:
- white cotton fabric (or premade white cotton napkins)
- sewing machine & white thread
- rolled hem sewing foot
- scissors
- light box
- star pattern (computer printout)
- straight pins
- red acrylic paint
- small paint brush
Step 1: Cut the white cotton fabric into 19″ squares. Using a rolled hem foot on your sewing machine hem up the edges.
Step 2: Print out a 3″ star shape and pin it to back side of napkin at center. *TIP* If you have a vinyl cutting machine you could easily make a stencil, stick onto the napkin and paint inside the stencil.
Step 3: Place the napkin with pattern attached on the lightbox. Then paint the star shape following the lines of the pattern. The acrylic paint dries in minutes and won’t come off in the wash.
