Make the most of that vertical wall space and add a simple wood plate rack. It not only looks warm and cozy but offers great functionality to your kitchen space.
A DIY tutorial to build a wood plate rack. Simple vertical storage for cutting boards and serving plates that looks beautiful too!
I happen to have a bazillion old cedar fence pickets lying around so I used all cedar for the frame of this plate rack but any lumber will work. Cedar is great because it smells yummy and has a pretty natural tone.
To finish I painted my backer and sealed the cedar with clear satin poly. Want more cedar projects?
I’m sharing the plans to this plate wall rack down below. Be sure to check out the video here before you begin, it shows the build in action.

Step 1: Notice I opted to route a channel to inset my backer. It’s not necessary but does make for a cleaner finish. Be sure to trim down your shelves as well in order to accommodate the backing thickness.
Step 2: All sanded and waiting for the backer to dry. Once the backing is attached then apply another coat of clear satin poly to everything.
I opted to hang my plate rack with a French cleat.
