I’m always on the prowl to make simple and easy valentines for my kids classmates. And this year I decided on these DIY mini clipboard valentines. They are a super simple project that requires very little supplies and can be used later for a cute photo, motivational print or other notepad paper.
A DIY tutorial to make mini wood clipboard valentines. An easy and inexpensive idea for DIY valentines plus it’s usable all year long!
Let’s just say I’m definitely not the wittiest person so I came up with ‘let’s clip together’ in reference to the binder clip. Sort of like ‘let’s get together’ (yeah, yeah, yeah – anyone love Hayley Mills in Parent Trap?).
Back to the project. These clipboard valentines are perfect with the printed cardstock but you could add candy to spice things up.
And if you’re looking for other DIY valentines ideas I’ve got you covered! PS – most of these ideas below do not involve candy.
DIY Valentines Ideas:
For this scrap wood clipboard I used 1×4 cedar but you could go bigger. A wider 1×6 would be nice or even 1×8. Just be sure to sand well and apply a clear finish to prevent any splinters.
For the binders clips I used all red. You can get them in all different colors or spray paint the clip portion to match your project.
I’ll show you down below how to make these DIY mini clipboard valentines.
Supplies:
- 1×4 scrap wood (or larger)
- red binder clips
- 1/2″ lath screws
- drill
- sandpaper
- clear satin polyurethane
Step 1: Cut scrap wood pieces to size. I used 1×4 cedar scraps cut to 6″ long then sanded well and sealed with clear poly.
Step 2: Mark the center of the wood board and 1/2″ down from top edge. Unfold binder clip metal portion as pictured above. Drill lath screw down into wood to hold one side of metal clip in place.
Print your valentine message on cardstock and attach a little candy. Hope you have a beautiful Valentine’s Day with love all around!

This is adorable. I was looking for something my kids could make for their teachers, male/female. I am having a picture taken of them with their teacher, printing it our and clipping to the board. I hope you are okay with me using your idea and making it for a teacher Valentine gift.
Thank you.
