Oil Based Paint Markers on Plastic

May 31, 2016

Fancy up and personalize plastic storage drawers using oil based paint markers!

Sharpie paint markers on plastic drawers
We’re prepping for summer camp and my girls asked for plastic storage drawers this year.  I added some fun, colorful designs with Sharpie paint markers to personalize the drawers.

I picked up these reasonably priced oil based paint markers at Michaels.  There are lots of colors available in single packs or multi pack and you can use them on virtually any surface including metal, wood, rubber, plastic, glass, stone and more.

As you can see the results on plastic are amazing.  The color is opaque and glossy, the paint marker doesn’t run or drip and it dries within seconds.
In fact I had so much fun decorating these plastic bins I found myself searching the house for more items where I could use these permanent paint markers.

My girls will use these plastic drawers at summer camp for small items and every day clothes (most likely socks and undergarments).  The drawers make easy access and they can see all the items versus digging through their big, deep camp trunks.

So beautiful and one of a kind with all the paint marker designs.  If you’re looking for inspiration be sure to check the Sharpie creations page, so many fun ideas and different applications using the oil based paint markers.
Below I’ll show you how I painted the designs on these plastic drawers:

Step 1: Use a circular template (I had a spirograph kit nearby) and tape it to the interior of the plastic bin.  You could also print out lettering or any other design to follow if you don’t like freehand.

Step 2: Follow the instructions on the paint marker to get it started, some shaking and tapping and the paint will appear.  Once the paint is flowing begin the center portion using the circular template as a guide.

Step 3: Keep building on the center portion adding new layers in different colors and patterns.

Keep building on each design.  The more layers, colors and patterns the better the design gets as you keep going.

Have fun, there’s no right or wrong and don’t forget to check your local newspaper and online for Michaels coupons while supplies last!

Will these markers work on plastic plant tags outside? I tried the Sharpie Extreme but they were not paint and the writing disappeared.

Hi Judy, I would guess YES these oil based markers should work on plastic plant tags outside once completely dry. Good luck and be sure to report back if you try it!

Hi Jody, Great point, yes you need to seal the paint with clear poly to prevent scratching off from repeated use.
