Ever get the desire to paint but then freeze up because you just don’t know how or where to start? You’re creative, you love to paint, and you want to make beautiful things but the actual process of putting paint to paper makes you stop short. I’m in your boat, despite painting hundreds of things like furniture and crafts, I tend to seize up when it comes to decorative, free hand painting. Join me as I dip my toes into decorative painting with a new video based education series “Make with Paint” from DecoArt and the Society of Decorative Painters.
Choose between two sets of projects – a flamingo design by Lucy from Craftberry Bush or this floral group by Cari from Cari’s Canvas. Each set comes complete with the supplies you need to make all three projects plus access to the video tutorials. As a special bonus for my readers you can enjoy 25% off your purchase by using my coupon code JAIME25 – click here to browse the projects.
I’ll be honest as a creative person I don’t like the idea of copying someone else’s work but in this case Cari created these designs specifically as a learning tool for others to try their hand at decorative painting. Cari did most of the work here so she deserves all the credit for the color selection, design layout and lettering, I simply followed the video step by step learning from her.
Once you have your kit unpacked set up your workspace within view of your computer monitor or Ipad and follow along as Cari explains each and every step including which paintbrush and paint color to use.
Use transfer paper to get Cari’s designs onto the surface, keep in mind the transfer paper is very sensitive and dark so use a LIGHT touch when transferring the designs.
You will amaze yourself with the results! Just look at these pretty flowers. I’ve done a teeny, tiny amount of freehand painting in my life so I would consider myself a beginner with limited experience. After making these three projects I feel I’m ready to tackle decorative painting on my own!
Cari breaks it down into easy steps with very simple strokes and explains each style of stroke just as if she was in the room teaching you. She gives you the basics and as you complete each project you will build on the skills from the previous project. I’ll admit my flowers definitely aren’t perfect but pretty good for a starting point.
