Land of 10,000 Lakes Sign

February 25, 2012

Also known as Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes is my birthplace.

Minnesota holds a special place in my heart, I was born and raised there.

I spent some time on these lakes:
Moore Lake in Fridley, MN
Coal Lake in Browerville, MN
Pleasant Lake in North Oaks, MN
Gull Lake in Nisswa, MN
and there are many others like White Bear Lake and Lake Owen (although technically in Wisconsin).

Inspired by Nicole Meyer’s Branding 10,000 Lakes project where she creates a logo for a Minnesota lake, one lake, one logo, every day.

Below is what she created for Coal Lake and Gull Lake:

And then I added the outline of the state, inspired by these state themed postcards:

And placed my sign prominently above our bed, my husband hails from New York City so this Midwestern girl deserves a little reminder of the good old days:

Here’s how I made the sign:

1. Using a piece of 3/4″ pine, paint two coats Behr swiss coffee:
how to make a handpainted sign
2. Print out lettering to fit sign.
Layout and trace letters with ballpoint pen which leaves an indent in the wood:

3. Paint inside the indent:

4. Layer the colors and add state outline:

5. Ready for distressing, stain and clear poly.

Thanks Minnesota for many years of great memories.

That sign is so awesome. And goes perfectly in the room, which is styled to perfection. Great job!

Back up! I hadn't heard of this branding of the lakes, but I am headed there NOW! That sign is perfection and this MN lake girl may have to do my own version! Wheeee!

LOVE it!! We spent many of our family vacations on Gull Lake and now kayak on the many smaller lakes around us. While our MN summers are short, they can't be beat!

The sign is the perfect addition to your wonderfully eclectic bedroom.

You could make those and sell them here in Minnesota – the folks would gobble them up!

What a great job you did on your sign, and I love the meaning behind it. We have lots of great beaches and lakes here in Ontario and I have always thought of doing a sign listing them all. Your idea of the map outline makes it make more sense.

I didn't grow up in Minnesota but I've now lived here for over nine years. I love the lakes and all that this State is. You created such a beautiful piece! Stopping by from the State Pride linky party. 🙂
