Decorating for Fall after a long hot summer sure feels good. Today I’m so excited to share my tabletop size rustic wheelbarrow along with 24 other amazingly creative wheelbarrows in a virtual blogger party!
A DIY tutorial to make a tabletop size rustic wheelbarrow using a small crate. An easy Fall decor item you can make from simple wood pieces.
I choose to make my wheelbarrow tabletop size and it’s just about the cutest thing you ever did see! Because I used a small size crate for this wheelbarrow which in turn creates a few modifications to the plans for a reduced size. I’ll show you how down below.
Now you have a place to put those bazillion apples from the orchard because I know you’ll come home with way more than you expected! Or how about mini pumpkins? Yes please!
As part of the virtual party I asked four of my DIY blogging friends to make their own version of the rustic wheelbarrow. And wow they knock it out of the park with beautifully customized wheelbarrows that truly fit their styles.

So this tabletop mini rustic wheelbarrow makes a great storage container for fruits or veggies.
And I added chalkboard signs to the sides of the mini crate. It’s an easy way to add color and makes a changeable label for you to write whatever you want!

Below I’m sharing how to build a tabletop size rustic wheelbarrow. As always be careful and safe with power tools.
SUPPLIES:
- 1 small crate (12″w x 9″l x 5″h)
- 2 – 36″l wood square baluster 2″ x 2″
- 1 – 1×6 scrap wood @ 5 1/2″l
- 1 – 3/8″ round dowel
- 2 1/2″ wood screws
CUT LIST:
- 2 – 2″ x 2″ square baluster @ 24″ (handles)
- 2 – 2″ x 2″ square baluster @ 5 1/2″ (suggest miter one end 10 degrees) (legs)
- 1 – 5 1/2″ circle (use 1×6 scrap) (wheel)
- 1 – 3/8″ round dowel @ 3 1/2″l (axel)
Step 1: Make a circular wheel using a piece of 1×6 scrap wood. Use a paint can or similar round object to draw a 5 1/2″ circle then cut out with a jig saw or scroll saw. Sand smooth.
Step 2: Predrill 3/8″ holes for the wheel axel in one end of both handles.
Step 3: I choose to insert the wheel and axel between the handles and then attach the handles to the bottom of the crate using 2 1/2″ wood screws. Finally attach the legs to the handle.
Lastly I added a chalkboard sign to the side of the crate. Cut a 1/4″ plywood scrap to size and paint with black chalkboard paint. Pre-paint L shaped moulding green and cut and glue to chalkboard frame:
The attach the chalkboard sign to the side of the mini crate.
