Need an easy gift idea for kids that you can make from one 1x6x6 board? How about a pair of bookends with a rainbow or a pencil? Super cute, simple and easy to make. I’ll show you how down below.
The rainbow bookends are such a pretty and colorful addition to any bookshelf and you could paint them any colors to match a theme.
Or the giant pencil bookends are fun too. I’m thinking they would make great teacher gifts?!
Below are plans for both the rainbow and pencil bookends. Always follow all safety precautions when operating power tools.
Cut List (per pair):
- 2 – 1×6 @ 6 3/4″ (sides)
- 2 – 1×6 @ 6″ (base)
- 2 – 1×6 @ 5 1/2″ (arch)
Step 1: Attach long end to base using wood glue and countersunk 1 1/4″ wood screws.
Step 2: Cut out arch shape using a jig saw. Mark 3/4″ thick arches and paint as desired.
Step 3: Center arch on bookend and attach using wood glue adn 1 1/4″ finish nails.
Cut List (per pair):
- 2 – 1×6 @ 6 3/4″ (sides)
- 2 – 1×6 @ 6″ (base)
- 1 – 1×6 @ 5 1/2″ (eraser end)
- 1 – 1×6 @ 6″ (pencil tip end)
Step 1: Cut out pencil shape using a jigsaw. Paint as desired.
Step 2: Make bookend same as rainbow bookend above (step 1 above).
Step 3: Attach pencil to bookend using wood glue and 1 1/4″ finish nails.
