Gearing up for the holidays and I needed a small sideboard for my dining room so I designed and built this console to fit my space.
In a land of behemoth size retail furniture it’s hard to find a small scale sideboard so why not build it yourself? I promise there is no drawer glide hardware involved almost all straight cuts so I would consider this to be a beginner project. (I tapered the base of the legs but that’s optional.)
I put together free plans for everyone available at BuildSomething.com, they are step by step instructions including a supply list and cut list. If you aren’t familiar with BuildSomething it is Kreg’s new DIY project plan site with hundreds of free plans to build all kinds of furniture. Kreg makes the awesome Kreg Jig pocket hole jig which is a must have tool for anyone building DIY furniture.
Are you ready for the holidays? Do you have an empy space that would be perfect for this sideboard?
For all the details please see the project plan post at BuildSomething.com. Below are a few of my building process notes and tips.
Step 2: When making the side panels be sure to make mirror images. That 1×3 portion sticking out is vital to the drawer operation and you want it on the interior of both sides.
Step 8: When adding the top (back view) be sure your 1 1/4″ wood screws are countersunk into the frame.

I opted to paint the base and drawers using DecoArt Americana Decor satin enamel in dark denim. Once dry, sand to distress the edges and apply Minwax stain in Early American. Then apply two coats of clear satin polyureathane. Attach drawer hardware (I used these) and place in your home!

Hi Jaime, I was especially drawn to the blue color you used here. But thank you so much for the plans. You’re an inspiration.
Did you use the Minwax stain on top of the blue paint as well as the natural finish top? If on top of the paint, why do you do that? Does it enrich the look?
Thank you.
