A friend had the cutest little kid size solid pine dressing table that got a makeover.
It was very dark, rustic and knotty:
I painted everything Benjamin Moore white dove (a close match to her other bedroom furniture), reused the existing hardware and recovered the terribly outdated stool:
(The new stool fabric is Waverly Ferris Wheel jacquard in violet.)
Now it’s truly fit for a young lady.
I distressed the edges to match her other bedroom furniture:
Here’s how to makeover the dressing table:
1. Sand all surfaces thoroughly:
2. Prime with Zinsser cover stain oil based primer.
Sand again.
3. Paint two coats Benjamin Moore Aura white dove in satin.
Aura does have primer mixed in with the paint color, I did this on purpose because this piece has a lot of dark heavy knots that I wanted to be sure stayed hidden forever.
4. Distress with sandpaper then add Minwax weathered grey stain just at edges.
Seal with two coats Minwax Polycrylic clear satin.
5. For the stool I cut a new piece of 3/4″ plywood to fit.
Add 2″ foam then quilt batting:
6. Staple batting taught to wood then cut fabric to size:

7. Staple fabric to wood then affix seat to stool base with wood screws in 4 corners:
what a difference! so fresh and pretty!
So pretty!

Someone had told me this works so I am SO glad to know it really does!! I love to paint furniture but have issues with my hands and can't sand! I'm painting my coffe table next weekend!! BTW ~ love the color!
