Everything is getting smarter these days, including home technology. I must admit our home is definitely not the smartest (yes I manually adjust the thermostat every morning and night) so one of my goals for 2016 is to make small changes that will help our home work better and smarter. When Schlage contacted me asking to try their new Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt I had to give it a whirl and bonus they are offering one lucky reader their own Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Handleset!
Look who’s smart now? I can control the deadbolt on my phone. I can even have Siri do it for me with voice control! No more fumbling with keys while my hands are full because my phone is usually in my hands anyways. The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt is designed to work with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. And if you happen to have an Apple TV in the home remote capabilities are possible too.
Naturally you would most likely be standing outside to unlock the door but I was having too much fun playing with the app inside I snapped this picture. The Bluetooth technology works up to about 40 feet in range from the door so you can unlock from the driveway with no problem.

On my door above I installed the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt with Camelot trim in aged bronze finish. The knob is Georgian style in aged bronze. In addition to using your iPhone you can use the illuminated touch screen to both lock and unlock the deadbolt.
Installation is fairly simple. I always work alone and this is definitely a one person job. The instructions included are extremely detailed plus there is an online video if you prefer visual instructions.
I did have to increase my door hole from 2″ to 2 1/4″. A little difficult using a hole saw because there is nothing to grab on to in the center but if you get the drill spinning fast then ease into the door it will work.
Once the door hole was enlarged installing the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt is easy. The patented Snap & Stay™ feature helps keep the touch screen portion in place on the exterior while completing the interior portion. Do be extremely cautious when installing your screws. There are 2 large screws that hold the interior portion to the exterior and they are placed right next to the locking gear. These screws must be installed precisely or it will cause the gear to rub against the screw (specifically on the right side) and prevent the deadbolt from working properly.
As my kids are getting older and have phones of their own I can give them access codes as well so no one is ever locked out. The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt has the ability to manage and schedule up to 30 access codes through a dedicated, easy-to-use free app. The Schlage Sense™ app allows me to create and delete codes, check on lock status and view activity, as well as update settings and check battery life without requiring a connection. Now I’m making some progress towards a smarter home!

With my oldest getting ready to stay on her own, I would not have to worry about her forgetting a key. This would be a great worry reducer.

I like the Schlage Sense Camelot in aged bronze. We've been contemplating switching to a smart lot for a while now, because, and I'm embarrassed to admit this, I have a really bad habit of leaving the keys in the door. Example, I'll come hobbling to the door with 18 bags of groceries in my arms (because I CAN make it in one trip 😉 ) struggle to unlock the door, get greeted by 200lbs plus of dog and by the time I'm through putting things away I've forgotten the keys are still in the door. Anywhos, I think that having a smart lot would make the struggle a little less of a struggle.

We are redoing our 1970's ranch that needs updating badly. We just finished the kitchen except for the doors. We are an almost retired couple and would like to feel a little bit safer in our home without putting chains, etc on our doors (not that they are effective deterrents anyway) without sacrificing a stylish look.
