Progress Report on Media Unit

March 13, 2012

Build: media unit progress report

A bit out of the ordinary for me to share an uncompleted project but this is one massive piece at
9 feet long and 7 feet high, it’s a monster of a storage unit.
A custom build for a family from school, this will be going in their family room to house not only the tv but store all those toys and games out of sight, behind the doors.

And with the added bookshelves and bridge unit there will be a bit of ‘adult storage’ as well for books, decorative items and such.

I took bits and pieces of plans from Ana White.

Her benchmark media console:
(modified for 4 doors, no drawers)

+
benchmark media tower:
(used the base portion only and modified for 2 doors)
+
media hutch:
(bridge portion modified for 2 open shelves)
The unit is composed of 6 separate pieces which makes delivery much, much easier.
Once in place the top units will be secured to the bottom pieces with mending plates on the backs.

We took inspiration from the media cabinet makeover by Honey We’re Home:

Although theirs is built in and this unit will be free standing.

Off to finish the missing doors, moulding and backing, then shop for hardware and paint.

Anyone want to help paint this massive beast?

Wow! Looks fantastic! I'm curious to know if you are putting in a brace or something on the bottom in addition to the legs? I guess it wouldn't be necessary, since the bottom is broken up in to three pieces. One day I want to build something just like this.

Me! I'll help paint! I tell my extended family that my only payment is never-ending jellybeans while I'm holding the paintbrush, lol! It is looking great. I'll have to show this to the Hubs–we've been discussing a media center for the basement and this would be perfect. Can't wait to see it finished.
