DIY Pencil Shaped Pencil Holder

July 18, 2014

Teacher gifts that are both personal and useful for the whole class are the absolute best.  Do your kid’s teachers a favor and make this DIY pencil shaped pencil holder for their classroom.  This way the teacher will have plenty of spare pencils on hand.

A DIY tutorial to make a pencil shaped pencil holder. Great teacher gift the whole class can enjoy or perfect for home with plenty of storage.

This large wood pencil holder is a fairly simply project and makes a great gift for any teacher.  And with minimal supplies this gift is relatively inexpensive.  One 1x4x6 board will yield 2 pencil holders plus a $2 pack of pencils and you have a budget friendly and useful gift.

I designed the pencil holder with staggered spacing for the pencil holes.  This 12″ long holder has space for 25 holes with about 1″ in between each hole.

For a personalized touch I handpainted the teacher’s name using this technique with American Typewriter font.

I love how the wood grain actually looks like a real pencil.

Down below I’m sharing the tutorial to make this pencil shaped pencil holder.  Be sure to read through entirely before beginning and always follow all safety guidelines when operating power tools.  And if you’re looking for other pencil holder project ideas try this one or this one.

Supplies:

  • 1 – 1x4x6 pine board (3 pieces @ 12″l)
  • wood glue
  • clamps
  • miter saw
  • sander
  • ruler
  • 5/16″ drill bit & drill
  • acrylic paint
  • spray polyurethane
wood glue up in clamps
Step 1: Attach the 3 boards together using wood glue and clamps.  Let dry.

Step 2: Make 2 opposing 30 degree miter cuts on one end to create the pencil tip.  Then sand the edges well and smooth.

Step 3: Use a ruler and mark the pencil holes.  I opted for three rows.  In each row there is 1″ between each pencil hole.
drill bit with tape to mark depth
Step 4: To make the holes use a 5/16″ drill bit which is slightly larger than a pencil.  Wrap a piece of tape around the drill bit to mark the depth at about 2″.  Then drill holes at each marked location until the tape hits the wood.

Step 5: Sand off any excess wood tear out.

Step 6: Paint the exterior with yellow acrylic paint to mimic a pencil.  Then add the personalization using this technique with American Typewriter font.

Step 7: Seal the pencil holder using clear gloss spray polyurethane.  Let dry completely then fill with pencils and wrap to give to your favorite teacher!
