I needed a solution for this blank wall which is very near a main walkway and I also wanted to give the kids a place to display all their work.
Anyone who has kids knows about the mountain of papers that accumulates.
(And this is just from one day!)
(And this is just from one day!)
While they aren’t Picassos, the kids do like to show off their work so I made these ledges from scrap wood I found in the garage. I based them off of Ana White’s ten dollar ledges (although mine are zero dollars).
I cut all pieces at 30″ long.
It’s a 1×2, 1×3 and 1×4 screwed together to make a back, ledge and front lip.
I sanded, primed and painted (Behr Elegant White satin finish).
I hung them low enough so they could change out the artwork on their own.
And I made three shelves, one for each child.
And I made three shelves, one for each child.
They are 2 1/2″ deep to allow for those three-dimensional projects the kids bring home.
And I screwed them into the wall with mollys and counter sunk the screw.
Perfect solution at no cost.
What a great solution for book shelves too!!!!! Love these!
These are great ledges for any kind of art. I can see leaning mirrors, art, photos all together. Great idea.
This is great! Neat, tidy, and stylish!
Functional and stylish, a winning combo.
I'm just waiting on the last coat of paint to dry before I put mine up.
Great idea. You can use the ledges for many things. I linked over from the Shabby Nest. I'm your latest follower. I'd love if you would follow me back. I'm from Rockland. http://www.diybydesign.blogspot.com Thanks.
These look great!
Those are great. I have a few ideas floating around in my head for the boys art display. Thanks for the inspiration! I'd love for you to come link up and share your project.

They look great! I would love to do this in my kid's play room. Thanks for linking up with Fun for Kids Friday.
These look great! I've been wanting something like this for books but I'm not as handy as you are with wood scraps and tools. The link you posted for the ten dollar shelves doesn't seem to be working. I was curious to see if there is somewhere to buy them.
They turned out great! I almost bought ledges just like these at IKEA, but am so glad I didn't! I'm in need of a couple of long ones above our couch, so I'm hoping I can go and dig up some scrap wood around here! Thanks for posting. 🙂
brilliant idea!
