Do you have scrap wood and scrap fabric coming out your eyeballs because you just can’t bear to throw it out? Guilty party here so I’m always looking for ways to combine wood and fabric and today I’m showing you how to make this diy wood quilt.
I went with a simple diagonal pattern changing up the fabric for each row, the pattern possibilities are endless because we’re working with squares. Search online for ‘quilt patterns using squares’ and you’ll find a bazillion combinations.
I made this wall decor wood quilt for my mother-in-law for her birthday and she happens to like purple and lilac colors so I pulled all different shades from my scrap fabric stash for this project.
Using the fabrics I had on hand I altered the lights and darks as well as large patterns versus smaller scale patterns to keep the final piece interesting.
All of the wood squares are attached to a plywood backing and then framed out in natural pine to complete the piece.
Imagine if you made a giant version of this! I definitely want to make something enormous like 4′ x 4′ with all these small 1 1/2″ squares, it would be so cool!
Supplies:
- 2×2 scrap wood cut into 5/8″ thick slices
- scrap fabric (1 1/2″ squares minimum)
- decoupage matte for fabric
- paint brush or foam brush
- scissors
- 1/4″ plywood (cut to size)
- wood glue
- 1×2 pine board (for frame)
- nail gun and 1 1/4″ finish nails
Step 1: Attach fabric to wood squares using decoupage. Paint the decoupage on the wood and then press fabric smooth. Let dry.
Step 2: Trim excess fabric around edge of wood square.
Step 3: Lay out wood squares in desired pattern.
Step 4: Cut 1/4″ plywood backing to size of wood squares. Slather backing with wood glue and place squares in position.
Step 5: Place a scrap piece of plywood on top of wood squares making a sandwich and then clamp down until dry.
Step 6: Cut a frame from 1×2 boards and attach with wood glue and 1 1/4″ finish nails.
Attach a sawtooth hanger to center top back for hanging.
