Wedding season is upon us and today I have an easy wedding cake ornament favor project to share. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, handmade favor idea that’s simple and beautiful then stay tuned for all the details below.
I only wish I had seen this idea way back when I was getting married because I definitely would have made these wedding cake ornament favors for my guests.
I used DecoArt Metallics paint in the color pearl for the cake body and it is so shiny and irridesent. The metallic paint has a beautiful shimmer and goes on super smooth. The patent pending reflective technology makes the light reflect evenly off the painted surface, my photos definitely do not do it justice.
Scroll down below for the step by step instructions on how to make and paint these wedding cake ornament favors.
Consider adding a personalized message to the bottom of your cakes so guests will remember when they got this wedding cake ornament. I printed the labels onto cardstock and cut out with a circle cutter.
Supplies:
- wood dowels of varying thickness
- saw
- sandpaper
- wood glue
- nail gun
- 1 1/4″ finish nails
- wood putty
- spray primer
- DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics color: pearl
- paint brush
- DecoArt Extreme Sheen colors: pink tourmaline and silver
- drill and bits
- small screw eyes
- metallic string
Step 1: Cut the various width dowels into different lenghts. For the base: 2″ dowel @ 3/4″ long, middle: 1 1/2″ dowel @ 1 1/2″ long, top: 3/4″ dowel @ 1″ long. Sand the cut edges smooth.
Step 2: Assemble the cakes. Attach the base to the middle using wood glue and 1 1/4″ finish nails. Then add the top to the middle. Apply wood putty to any visible nail holes and spray with primer.
DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics paint comes in 14 beautiful colors that are non-toxic and easy to clean up with soap and water.
Step 3: Use metallic paint in pearl and a paint brush to apply 3 coats on the cakes.
In addition I used DecoArt Extreme Sheen metallic paint to add the decorative dots. Extreme sheen is the brightest, water based, acrylic metallic paint on the market and it comes in trendy colors (and classic colors too). Pick a color that coordinates with your wedding theme and add a decoartive element to the cake ornaments.
Step 4: I used Extreme Sheen in pink tourmaline and silver for the garland. Simply dip the end of a paintbrush into the paint and create dots to make the garland.
Step 5: To add the hanging loop predrill a small hole in the center of the top. Insert a screw eye into the hole and twist until snug. Add a silver metallic string for hanging.
Display your wedding cake ornament favors like desserts on a stand. I made this tiered cupcake stand a few years back (tutorial here). Your favors serve a dual purpose of adding a decorative touch to your event and your guests get to take one home as a keepsake!
