No you are not seeing a repeat of the vanity desk build but rather a new and improved version with four small drawers and two deep drawers. Having two girls means I get to make a lot of projects twice, oh joy! On the bright side whenever you have to make something more than once there is always room for improvement and that’s why I’m sharing the modified plans for this vanity desk.
A DIY tutorial to build a desk with lots of drawers. Make a vanity style desk with tons of storage and bonus no fussy drawer glides!
I originally posted this diy vanity desk last June with it’s fun modern hardware pulls built for my youngest daughter. It’s got 8 identical drawers stacked one side however they are shallow and we decided we needed a few deeper drawers.
So this past Fall I finally got around to making the second desk for my older daughter and decided having 8 small drawers wasn’t working. But rather we needed 4 small drawers and 2 deeper drawers for bigger items.
Less Drawers Better Functionality
In addition I think visually having the larger drawers helps give weight to the design. At any rate I actually stole 4 small drawers from desk #1 to use for desk #2 and modified the original desk adding 2 deep drawers on that one too.
So now both girls have the same desk except different colored hardware pulls. They’re fun and most importantly functional for all their bits and pieces.
I’m sharing the plans down below for this vanity desk. Be sure to read through the entire plans before beginning. And always follow all safety precautions when operating power tools.
The deep drawers use 1×6 boards following the same method as the smaller drawers.
Taper all the drawer side pieces using a jig saw or miter saw.
Attach the sides to the back using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails or wood screws.
Attach the base the the sides and back using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails or 3/4″ wood screws.
Attach the front using wood glue and 1 ¼” finish nails. For more details on the hardware pulls and the entire desk plans see my previous post here.
I hope you like this modified version of the vanity desk with the new and improved larger drawers. My girls sure enjoy having their own desk space and I loved building it for them.
The framed pinboard is also a diy project. For more details on how to make this pinboard click here.
Very nice clean lines. Do you find it hard to find straight wood. We were at Home Depot yesterday and had an awfully time. We finally bought some only to get home and find it worst that we though. Good money for birdhouse lumber.
June 2020… It hasn’t gotten any better. Wood quality has gone down hill as prices have soared!
