DIY Stacking Burger

November 25, 2016

After yesterday the last thing you want is more food but I promise this won’t make your pants tight!  It’s a diy stacking burger made from scrap wood for today’s Handbuilt Holiday gift plan.
handbuilt holiday gift plan series
As promised Ana White and I will post a new gift build every Friday through Christmas as part of the Handbuilt Holiday series.  We are on week 8 and still have 4 more fun gift build plans to share.

This stacking burger was so fun to make and even more fun to play with.  Search through your scrap wood pile for pieces of differing thicknesses and then go crazy making all the toppings!

I made the basics: bun top and bottom, hamburger, american cheese, swiss cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, bacon, and mushroom.  Make whatever you like on your burger.

This is a really simple build that requires very minimum experience.  A jig saw or scroll saw will do most of the work then paint the pieces using acrylic craft paints.  Ana has the details here.

To make the curve on the hamburger bun top I cut a 5″ circle out of a 2×6 scrap then using my disc sander I removed a portion of the edge to make the domed look of a bun.

Once all the pieces are cut an sanded you’ll want to apply primer so your paint colors stand out.
Sand again and then use acrylic paints to create the different foods.
thats my letter on Instagram
I shared this stacking burger over on Instagram while I was still working on painting the pieces.  After paint I sealed the pieces with clear semi-gloss polyurethane.  * Consider the paint and poly you use if you plan to make this for very young children, non-toxic is best. *
