This post about a DIY holiday mantel is sponsored by The Home Depot. It’s about that time to start thinking about holiday decor. And I desperately want to relish in the season but I don’t want to spend every waking minute setting up holiday decor. So I’m sharing this simple holiday mantel I made with just a few basic items. Come join me as we decorate for the holidays!
A DIY tutorial to create a simple holiday mantel. I’ll show you easy Christmas decor in 4 steps using holiday garland, wood lanterns, sprigs and ornaments.
Everyone wants a touch of holiday in their home to celebrate the season and all that is to come. But no one wants to spend a fortune on decor or make it so elaborate and fussy it takes forever to put up. Let’s make a simple holiday mantel with just 4 decor items.
Holiday Mantel Supplies:
First and foremost look through your holiday decor and gather like items. Maybe you don’t have five lanterns but you do have a group of pillar candles that would work great. Perfect, use what you have and fill in as needed.
For a simple holiday mantel we want a base green element – that would be the garland. Secondly we need a natural or wood element which is the lanterns here. Third we need a contrasting color and texture to the green. I used red berry sprigs because I like classic Christmas colors. But you could grab any silk flowers, grasses or feathers. And lastly we want an add-in to the garland. I used glass ball ornaments in all the same silver color. Again any ornament or holiday pick where you have multiples of would work great as long as it’s a different shape and color than the third element.
Want to see it all in action? I shared the set up process in a video here:
Garland:
I’m loving the 12’ elegant natural fir artificial garland. It fits our long living room mantel just perfectly. This Home Accents holiday garland comes pre-lit with 300 LED micro dot lights that give off a bright and warm twinkly glow. The LED energy efficient lights stay cool to the touch even when the garland is lit all day long.
Lanterns:
If you haven’t already guessed then I’ll tell you – the wood lanterns are a DIY project. I actually made them for a friend’s wedding reception as centerpieces but I love reusing them around my home. They are simple to make and use basic square dowels from Home Depot. Get the complete tutorial on how to make various sizes of the wood lanterns here.
Step by Step Tutorial:
See the complete process step by step at The Home Depot Blog here. Each step is written and includes details to create this simple holiday mantel.
Like all decor my mantel started off a bit bare and lonely. Once I got the garland up as a base then the remaining pieces it all came together really easy. See the complete tutorial here.

Hi Jaime
The lanterns are lovely!
Do you ever take orders to make?
I am totally not talented to make.
I would love to order 6 about 12 inches tall
for my daughter’s wedding.
Even if you didn’t want to stain.
I can stain them.
Thanks and hope to hear from you.

Hi Barb, thank you for your nice comments. I do take orders but only for local delivery (I’m in Westchester County, NY) because shipping becomes astronomical. Best option is to find someone local to you if possible. Best wishes for all the wedding planning!
