It’s that time of year – back to school – and I secretly happen to love back to school for so many reasons: structure, schedule and hooray for learning! With that I decided we needed a large chalkboard wall calendar so my kids can see exactly what’s happening in the upcoming days.
I used DecoArt Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating over the paint colors to make this fun, colorful chalkboard wall calendar.
You can make any painted surface into a chalkboard using this coating it’s that simple. I will say that darker painted surfaces are going to work better because you will be able to see the chalk. However chalk does come in a huge variety of colors so if you want to mix it up an go with a light paint color, add the chalkboard coating and then use dark chalks I say go for it!
I will share the complete tutorial down below to make this chalkboard wall calendar.
This is a great scrap busting project if you happen to have a lot of 1/4″ plywood pieces lying around.
Step 1: Cut 8″ squares from 1/4″ plywood scraps. Cut 35 squares total for the main portion. Cut 7 pieces at 8″ x 4″ for the days of the week at top.
Step 2: Paint the squares as desired. I used 5 DecoArt Americana Decor Satin Enamel colors as the base. I recommend using darker paint colors which allows the chalk to show up best but like I said above you could go light and use dark chalks.
Step 3: Optional – using a belt sander clean up the cut edges of the plywood.
Step 4: To enhance the deep paint colors and add a little character I applied a dark stain on top of the paint. Wipe excess and let dry.
Step 5: Build the frame. Click here for a printable PDF version of this sketch. I used all 1×2 boards and pocket holes for assembly with wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.
CUT LIST:
- 2 – 1×2 @ 53″ (top & bottom)
- 2 – 1×2 @ 44″ (sides)
- 6 – 1×2 @ 41″ (dividers)
Step 6: Secure the square boards to the frame using wood glue and 3/4″ finish nails. Start at one corner and work in columns to keep everything lined up.
Step 7: Clear off any dust using a chip brush and give a quick wipe with a damp cloth.
Step 8: Apply the DecoArt Americana Clear Chalkboard Coating. I used a foam roller and apply the first coat horizontally then let dry. Apply the second coat vertically. Season the surface with chalk and you’re ready for use!
Now the whole family can see what is on the calendar for the month. I love have everything visible, I think it adds a sense of excitement and anticipation, especially considering we’re talking about back to school.
I hope you have the perfect spot in your home for a chalkboard wall calendar or maybe consider applying chalkboard coating to a piece of furniture or other flat surface.

Love this idea, Jaime! Love the size – plenty of space for all the activities. And I also love the pop of color.

My kids have already added their own 'touches' but it's so fun and true there's plenty of space.
