“B” is for Big Sibling Aprons

Paint & sew: big sibling aprons

big brother and big sister aprons

When that new baby arrives don’t forget big sister and big brother!

Take a plain kid size apron, sew on a fun pocket and paint their name.  Then add a fresh pack of crayons and paper and you have a nice sibling gift that might also keep them occupied while mom is busy with the new baby.

I added a bright floral printed pocket for big sister Charlotte and even trimmed the pocket with a gingham ruffle:

Big brother Tommy’s apron is just as cute with a bold printed pocket:

The pocket is trimmed in a red binding made from a cotton print cut on the bias:

Here’s how to make big sibling aprons:
1. Purchase kid size canvas aprons.

2. Find center of apron and center of print out by folding in half:

3. Pin print out to back side of apron lining up at center point.
Using a light box and thin Sharpie (in color to match your paint) trace outline of letters onto apron:

4. Now paint inside the traced letters with fabric safe paint:

5. To make pocket cut a piece of cotton to fit bottom half of apron:

6. Make ruffle (1 1/4″ cut on bias x 2x width of pocket) and pin in place.
Cut bias binding 1 1/4″ x width of pocket:

Sew binding in place and press open:

7. Finish binding edge by folding in raw edge then fold again.
Top stitch in ditch from front.

8. Lay pocket piece on top of apron and trim to 1/2″ overhang keeping curves in mind:

9. Fold under 1/2″ raw edge and top stitch pocket in place along edge of apron:
