“P” is for Pencil Holder Favors

February 14, 2013

Craft: pencil holder party favors

Take a square dowel, drill holes, stick in some personalized pencils, attach a tag and you have a great, useful party favor:

We have a birthday coming up and my girl #2 has decided on a ‘build it’ theme party.
The girls will be building a take home project (post later to come) so naturally the party favor needs to be along those lines.
I know – not another pencil – but my kids are constantly looking for pencils so I figure it’s still a good favor and one that will probably get some use.

I made the ‘you are the WRITE friend’ tags using Pinterest, then printed on white cardstock.
The pencils are from Oriental Trading here and come with free personalization:

And I LOVE how they carved the personalization out of the pencil rather than stamp it with shiny gold ink:

Each pencil holder costs about $5 in supplies, easy to make and assemble too.
That makes for a great favor in my book.
Here’s how to make the pencil holders:
1. Purchase 1 3/4″ square dowels.
You can find these in the molding section and they come in 3′ lengths.
(I had some scraps leftover from the legs on this project that were already 10 1/2″ long.)
Cut the dowels at 10 1/2″ (or your preferred length).
2. Make a template for the pencil holes.
Cut cardstock to match length of dowel then mark evenly spaced dots and punch out with hole punch:
Transfer template to dowel and mark holes with pencil:

3. Use a drill bit to match your pencil diameter (or slightly bigger).
I used 5/16″:

4. Tape off drill bit to mark stopping point:

5. Drill holes at marked dots, be sure to keep bit vertical or pencils will be tilting:

6. Print out tags.
Use metal brads at ends and thick embroidery floss or string:

7. Poke brad through end of paper and tie string around brad pokers then open pokers flat:
Tie string as snug as possible.
Flip tag over and your ready to party.
