It’s a party today and you don’t want to miss all the beautiful wooden door mat projects we are sharing! As part of The Home Depot DIY Workshop series 25 creative diy bloggers have come up with their own custom versions of the wooden door mat project being offered in stores this coming Saturday, March 26th at 10am.
I choose to use cedar boards for my custom version, I just love cedar, it’s great for outdoor projects and it wears to a beautiful grey color over time.
I cut the boards at a 45 degree miter then threaded the rope through the boards using the knots as spacers in between the boards. The complete step by step tutorial is down below.
But first the virtual party – I asked four of my blogging friends to join me in creating their own version of the wooden door mat and holy smokes look what they came up with!
This vitrual party is bigger than just me and my four friends, there are actually 25 custom wooden door mat projects made by diy bloggers. You definitely want to check out all the amazing and unique ideas!

Supplies:
- 4 – 1x2x8 cedar boards
- 1/4″ x 50′ Manila Rope
- 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws
- 2″ finish nails
- clear satin polyurethane, exterior
Step 1: Create the frame. Attach (2) 15″ short sides to (2) 30″ long sides using 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step 2: Begin the slats in one corner cutting a 45 degree mitered piece at 21 1/4″ long pointto short point. Be sure to measure your frame for exact cutting length. Predrill holes for the rope using 5/16″ drill bit and thread rope pieces halfway through tieing a knot on either side of the wood slat. Secure the wood slat to the frame using 2″ finish nails from the exterior.
Continue adding more slats using the rope knots as spacers. Be sure to measure each cut and when a rope is at the end drill a shallow hole in the frame to hide the rope ends.
When the rope ends in the corner drill a hole directly into the corner and then also up through the underside in order to pull the rope through.
Once in position tie the rope with a knot and shove the knot back down into the hole so the doormat sits flat.
Sand the doormat well and seal with minimum two coats clear satin polyurethane.
