DIY Santa Stop Here Post Free Plans

November 8, 2017

Want to add a touch of fun and whimsy to your outdoor space for the holidays?  Surprise those little ones with a Santa stop here post made from easy to find wood parts and classic holiday paint colors.  I’m sharing the free plans to make this Santa stop here sign post down below.

santa stop here post

A DIY tutorial to build a Santa stop here sign post perfect for your exterior space. Includes free printable plans and printable lettering for sign.

I went full out Christmas theme with this Santa stop here sign.  The swirling stripe pattern on the post is indicative of a candy cane.  Then I printed out the lettering and hand painted the words using the outline.  You could also make a stencil using a vinyl cutting machine.

building a santa stop sign

Build the Santa stop here sign post using my plans above.  I opted to prime everything below the post cap.  For the most part I used pressure treated lumber for this project as it will be outdoors.  So priming helps create an opaque background for the different paint colors especially helping to keep the white parts white.

Then tape off everything below the post cap with a plastic bag and spray paint the post cap and finial with metallic gold.

Making Candy Cane Stripes

To mark the angled candy cane stripes on the post use a clear quilting ruler.  This ruler is marked with various angles (30-45-60) and I used the 30 degree angle grid to make my lines.

After all the stripes are marked with pencil use blue painters tape to mask off portions as you go along painting the stripes.

using computer printout for letter pattern

For the Santa stop here sign portion I printed out lettering using this document.  Center the lettering on the sign and trace with ballpoint pen to create an indent.

Then paint on and inside the lines.  Be sure to use exterior friendly paint like DecoArt Americana Outdoor Living.

Hi! Thank you so much for these plans and site. I’m really enjoying the projects. I read over the linked plan for this one and cannot figure out how you do the top ball. I read that you pretrial and screw it in. How is there a screw in it.. I’m sorry. I’m new and confused lol.

Hi Sara, The top ball finial piece comes with a lag bolt already installed into the underside. When you buy it at the store it comes with the screw preinstalled and ready to screw into your post. Hope that helps.
