DIY Painted Stripe Runner

September 15, 2016

Getting fancy in the laundry room with a painted stripe runner on the steps.  It’s colorful, easy and inexpensive.

You may recall when I painted our basement staircase runner at our old house with the stars?  This time around I only have three short steps into the laundry room and I went with a more crisp, striped runner using red, white and blue:

It’s super easy and fast with a little patience for drying time.  Let’s look at the before:

laundry room wooden steps before
Pretty boring.  Dirty and scuffed up from use.  (Nevermind the hardware pieces sitting there sorry.)

laundry room wooden steps after
Fresh and shiny and looks like a whole new space.  The painted stripe runner is part of the laundry room makeover including a new recycling tower in the corner.

Below are the steps I took to paint the striped runner.

Step 1: Sand existing paint well and good.  Paint 6″ of each edge with Benjamin Moore london fog.  (You can use floor & porch paint but I used regular interior latex in eggshell finish and sealed with poly after.)
Step 2: For ease I recommend a clear quilting ruling.  With a pencil mark 6″ from edge, then 3/4″ thick stripe, then 1 1/4″ thick stripe and another 3/4″ thick stripe.

Step 3: Usie painters tape to mask off center portion and paint Benjamin Moore old navy.

Step 4: Reposition the tape to mask off the 3/4″ stripe portions and paint white.
Step 5: Apply new tape for last 1 1/4″ stripe and paint Benjamin Moore cottage red.

Step 6:  Pull off the tape while the paint is still damp to reveal the finished stripe.
Step 7: Seal with 3 coats Minwax clear satin polyurethane.  Light sanding in between coats.
