A DIY tutorial to build kids adirondack chairs. Perfect for fourth of July or any backyard time these kid sized chairs are just the right fit.

kids adirondack chairs

Nothing says summer more than an adirondack chair and this kids version is the cutest addition to our backyard space.  I love the glossy white contrast against the luscious green grass.  And for a fun personalized touch I added a handpainted star at the center back of each chair.

Below you can see the pint size dimensions of this chair fit my daughter perfectly.  She is 6 years old here in her seersucker dress and sits comfortably with plenty of room to spare.

I choose the star shape detail because I happen to have a love affair with stars but you could add any personalized shape, word or monogram.  I’ll show you how-to down below.
These kids adirondack chairs are extremely sturdy and spacious, big enough even Mommy just fits!

The perfect backyard accessory, even if the kids don’t sit in them very long they still make nice lawn furniture.

Supplies:

  • plans (similar to Ana’s plans here)
  • chairs
  • jig saw
  • spray primer
  • white gloss spray paint
  • clear gloss poly
  • star pattern printout
  • ballpoint pen
  • patio paint exterior acrylic paint
  • small paintbrush

Step 1: Build the chairs as per Ana’s plans.  For the back piece use a jig saw to cut out the curved top.
scrap wood as a spacer between slats
Step 2:  When attaching the seat slats to the frame use a piece of 1/2″ scrap plywood as a spacer.  This ensures even spacing and gives you a place to rest the slat while drilling into position.
natural pine versus primed pine
Step 3: Sand the chair well and prime with an oil based primer.  Sand again and then paint using gloss white spray paint.
star pattern printout
Step 4: To make the star detail you need to print out a 1.75″ star from your computer.  Center the printout on the chair back and trace the outline using a ballpoint pen with heavy pressure.

Step 5: I used DecoArt Patio Paint with a small round #3 paint brush.

Step 6: Paint on and inside the indent left behind by the pen.  You will need a few coats here.

Step 7: For added protection add a coat of clear spray gloss polyurethane.

Place your new kids adirondack chairs in the backyard and enjoy some time in the great outdoors.

The pictures shown above are not the chair that Ana shows. How do I find the plans for the chair that you show here? Also, how high is the back on this chair from the ground?

Hi William, the plans for this exact chair I believe are in Ana’s book: https://amzn.to/3bTvS4r (affiliate link). The plan linked above is similar (and free) but you are correct it’s not the exact chair. My kids have long outgrown these chairs (I built them 8 years ago) so I don’t have the exact dimension you are looking for.
