DIY Seersucker Dresses

February 23, 2012

New dresses for my girls in classic blue and white seersucker.  Nothing says Spring or Summer quite like seersucker especially with the cutest ruffle detail!  Sharing the details on how I made these dresses with a white cotton yoke neckline.

A DIY tutorial to make seersucker yoke neck dresses with a ruffle trim detail. The perfect Spring and Summer dress for your little ones.

A very unusually warm day in February in New York so we headed to the beach for these photos.  Barefoot and all my girls pulled out their best modeling capabilities to show off their new dresses.  Just the sweetest, super easy to make and breezy to wear.young girls on beach in seersucker dresses
Below are the instructions for how to make this seersucker yoke neck style dress.

Supplies:

  • cotton seersucker fabric
  • white cotton Kona fabric
  • lightweight fusible interfacing
  • Simplicity pattern #2270
  • 20″-22″ invisible white zipper
  • sewing machine & thread
  • scissors
  • straight pins
  • rotary cutter & clear quilting ruler
  • self healing mat
pattern pieces simplicity #2270
Step 1: Using the Simplicity pattern #2270 dress B cut out the pieces.  I also cut out lightweight fusible interfacing for the yoke portion just to give a little stiffness to the neck.
Step 2: Follow the pattern for the dress construction.

Step 3: To make the ruffle trim I cut 3/4″ bias strips.  Measure the circumference of the dress then multiple by 2 to get the length of bias strips you need for a one fluffy ruffle.  Sew all the strips together to make one long piece and then sew a loose zig zag stitch down the middle of the strip.  Gently tug on one of the zig zag threads to make the strip ruffle up.  Pin the ruffle in position on the dress and sew a straight stitch down the middle to attach.  Finally go back and use a seam ripper to remove the zig zag stitch.

The perfect lightweight dress for all those Spring and Summer events.  Cheers to sewing all the things!

The dresses are adorable and the girls look so sweet. I made matching dresses for my girls, who are now grown, and they always loved them. It is fun to see seersucker being used again.
