Looking for a wreath alternative for Fall? In a quirky nod to Thanksgiving and all things turkey I made a giant wishbone for my front door. It’s a simple and quick project that’s fun for all to enjoy.
A DIY tutorial to make a giant wishbone for your Thanksgiving decor. A great wreath alternative or fun wall decor for Thanksgiving.
The wishbone trend is still going strong so why not make a giant wishbone this Fall? Our back door serves as the main entry and it’s a bit tight at 30″ wide so having a wreath here really doesn’t work. The wreath gets knocked off, it blocks the passage and makes things feel cramped. So I opted to make a giant flat wishbone for Fall.
Wishbone Decor:
I’ve been seeing wishbones everywhere and you could definitely carry this theme through for all of your Thanksgiving decor including:
For the front door I made this giant wishbone about 20″ h x 14″w. It’s flat and only 1/2″ thick but it’s fun and gold too!
Below I’m sharing how to make a giant wishbone.
Supplies
- 1/2″ mdf (about 2o” x 14″)
- pencil & ruler
- jig saw
- palm sander
- gold spray paint
- primer
Step 1: Sketch the giant wishbone shape directly onto 1/2″ MDF. I used a smaller sketch, made a graph and transferred the design to the larger size. Try free clip art as a starting point.
Step 2: Cut out the wishbone using a jigsaw and then sand the edges smooth.
Step 3: Spray with primer, sand and then paint metallic gold.

I don't know if anyone else has told you yet, but the wishbone needs to have the opening at the top otherwise all the luck falls out. 😉

Thank you for sharing your awesome gold wishbone. I am excited to make several for my very large, multi generational families Thanksgiving centerpieces.
