A tool review of the Ryobi 6 piece combo kit. The perfect tools for a DIY beginner looking to tackle various projects. Beginner tools and basic uses.
As the DIY trend continues to grow I often get asked the question “What tools do I need to get started?” Here’s my answer: this beginner tools bundle from Ryobi. It has all the basics that will cover you for lots of projects in and around your home.
6 Piece Tool Combo Kit Includes:
- drill with bit
- impact driver with bit
- reciprocating saw with blade
- circular saw with blade
- multi-tool with accessories
- work light
- 18V 1.5Ah battery
- 18V 4Ah battery
- battery charger
- carrying bag
Drill:
Let’s start with a simple beginner project like hanging hooks in my son’s bedroom. I used the drill to hang the wood cleat and then used the drill again to attach the metal hooks. With a 1/2″ heavy duty keyless chuck I was able to easily switch bit sizes.
And then I switched over to a star tip to install the lock on his sliding barn door. As part of the 90% club I built and installed the door months ago but never added the lock. Finally getting around to those last little lingering to-dos is easy when you have the right tools. Also this drill has a 24 position clutch so you can match your drilling and driving needs depending on the project application.
Multi-Tool:
Included in the beginner tools bundle is a multi-tool. You’ll use this cordless multi-tool for so many things you never even thought of. The Ryobi multi-tool has an optimal speed control dial and features a lock-on button to reduce fatigue. It’s great for demo especially near trim work, slicing off pocket hole plugs, making flush cuts, sanding into tight corner areas and more. Check my Instagram stories to see it in action.
Reciprocating Saw:
As I grow older I’ve come to understand the importance of owning a reciprocating saw. This tool sees more general use in an around our home than any other tool in my shop. The Ryobi cordless reciprocating saw includes a variable speed trigger and a 1 inch stroke length. I use it for most cutting applications that don’t require accuracy – tree limbs, breaking down large bulk trash items, small metal cuts, etc.
Circular Saw:
A circular saw is a great addition to the beginner tools bundle because it forces you to learn control. And it has the ability to make long straight cuts which cannot be done on a miter saw.
I’m loving how Ryobi is getting smarter with their tool designs and have now incorporated onboard storage for the hex wrench. You can see in the photo above how it slides right into the housing near the rear. No more searching for the correct size hex wrench when you need to change the blade.
This is a fairly lightweight circular saw and pretty compact considering the capability. It handles well with a front pommel handle for two handed operation. Also the blade is mounted on the left side so you can better see the cutline.
I used this Ryobi circular saw with a straight edge to cut down a sign backer that was too wide for my table saw. Worked like a charm to cut off a 1/4″ sliver.
Impact Driver:
The workhorse of all the beginner tools is the impact driver. Quite honestly I reach for the impact driver far more often than the drill mostly because I love the torque and power it delivers. Making pocket holes is a breeze with the variable speed trigger. This is also the tool you’ll want for driving long and large screws and bolts.
Work Light:
Last but not least is the cordless work light. It has a beautiful ergonomic design and 160 Lumens of light.
Beginner Tools Combo Kit:
This Ryobi 6 piece bundle is available at The Home Depot here. In addition to the six tools mentioned above the package includes two batteries, a battery charger and carrying bag. This makes a wonderful beginner tools grouping and even better gift idea.
