We can’t have it all (well we could but it would cost you a pretty penny) but we can have beautiful touches of Christmas scattered about our homes. Even better when those Christmas bits and pieces are made by you. In true DIY style I’m sharing my Christmas holiday home tour in project format.
Come tour my Christmas holiday home with DIY projects tucked in every corner. Sharing a holiday home tour with touches you can do yourself.
Starting with scrap cedar wood floral boxes you can make for centerpieces. The smaller version above are 1×4 cedar boards with mini evergreens from the grocery store. And the larger version down below are 1×6 cedar boards. Either size is wonderful for adding flowers and greenery, I shared how to build the boxes and add the floral arrangement here.
TIP: Grab the excess Christmas tree clippings from the ‘free bin’ at your nursery and use them as filler for floral arrangements and garland.
Living Room Mantel
Moving on to the Living Room mantel where I made more scrap cedar wood boxes with rope cleats to hang the kids stockings. This year we are using the quilted swiss cross stockings I shared awhile back. I handpainted all those little red crosses to get the look I wanted. There’s something so rewarding about creating things exactly as you envision.
I threw together the wood and fabric MERRY sign above the mantel a few years ago when I picked up the letters on clearance. Simply stretch red plaid fabric over a wood board and staple to the back. Attach the MERRY letters and trim out using 1×2 boards.
TIP: Can’t find red plaid fabric you love? Use a tablecloth, buy them on clearance the year before and you’ll save a ton.
Outdoor Christmas Decor
No Christmas holiday home tour would be complete without stopping to see the exterior. Nothing too fancy here just a cute little sign for Santa so he won’t forget my kids.
This Santa stop here sign post is made using basic lumber from Home Depot. I have the free step by step plans are here and I also share how to hand paint this Santa sign. Wouldn’t your kids love this little surprise just before the big day?!
Holiday Home Entry
Back inside the mudroom is outfitted with a simple red bench. Every mudroom needs a spot to sit or rest items when you come in the house. Here I built a simple bench and of course the red paint is a perfect nod to the Christmas holiday. I have the free plans to build the bench right here.
I hope you enjoyed my Christmas holiday home tour of DIY projects. Some days I wish I could magically snap my fingers and have all the perfect decorations everywhere but that isn’t reality. Until then I will indulge in creating moments of DIY pleasure as I we prepare for this holiday season.

I love a good DIY Christmas. Those boxes with the trimmings are amazing! Also, I had no idea there is a free trimming box offered at tree farms. Mind = blown. I always just cut off the bottom branches of my tree and use those. I’m so excited to look for free trimmings now!
Jaime says
I’m always on the lookout for those extra trimmings. I too cut off the bottom branches but I find myself needing (and wanting) more. My Home Depot has a crate full of the excess bits near the tree wrapping station – such a bonus!
