Build for Dad

May 14, 2015

Father’s Day is coming soon so today I’ve rounded up 4 diy projects you can build for dad.  In fact any man is sure to appreciate one of these simple diy gift ideas.

A few of my favorite buildy blogger friends have great project ideas that you might consider making for dad.
Pauline at My Altered State made these wood slice keychains from scraps!  Check out how she did it here.

I whipped up this valet tray from scraps too.  Dads always have ‘pocket stuff’ that needs corralling.  This is super easy and fast, get the details including size and cuts down below.
Most Dads like beer so Jamison’s diy beer tote makes a perfect gift.  He has detailed plans on his blog Rogue Engineer here.
Brooke at Killer B Designs made this awesome wood couch sleeve that provides a flat surface and storage all in one!  See her build details here.
How to make a wood valet tray:
I used a 1×8 scrap to make the base here.  Always be careful and use safety precautions with power tools.
Cut list:
1 – 1×8 @ 7 1/4″
2 – 1×2 @ 7 1/4″
2 – 1×2 @ 8 3/4″

Step 1: Attach short sides to opposite sides of base using glue and 1 1/4″ finish nails.

Step 2: Attach long sides to base.
To add the letters I printed out ‘DAD’ in Avenir Next font at 250 point.

Center the letters on the tray and trace using a ballpoint pen with heavy pressure.

Paint on and inside the indent left by the pen.  Stain and seal as desired.

Thank you for all of these ideas. After reading them, I made some key rings out of some scrap mahogany that I had lying around. They turned out so good that my wife asked for a personalized one a bit larger with her name on it. Your tutorial for putting the name "Dad" on the valet allowed me to do an excellent job with her name, and an additional "I 'heart' U" on the other side. I will make a valet tomorrow. Great ideas!
