Friends there’s still time (14 days to be exact!) to make gifts and today we’re sharing a super fun truck shelf. It’s a bookshelf with truck features ready to hang on the wall or sits on its own.
Today is build #11 of this year’s Handbuilt Holiday series with Ana White and myself. We have done 11 gift plans these past 11 weeks, hopefully you found a plan just right for that special someone and are hard at work building away!
In case you missed any of the previous plans links to each one are here. But today is an extremely cute and functional truck shelf and I’m in love!
(PS – it’s not just for kids! I couldn’t help myself and threw some trees in the back you might have seen it over on Instagram!)
Ana designed this truck shelf with plenty of storage space for books and pencils (or trees!). I hope the books above give you a good idea of scale but I also had my 8 year old son hold the truck shelf just so you can see how substantial it is:
Deep enough to hold multiple large board books or turn paperbacks sideways and they fit just fine.
How about some pencils in the cab? Or a flashlight would fit too! The details really make this truck shelf complete, I cut up dowels to make the headlights and wheel rims. The black wheels are 3″ precut wood discs.
Don’t forget the tail lights too! For the truck sides in the cargo area I used flat molding (1/4″ x 1 3/8″) but 1x2s would work just fine. I stained the molding pieces Minwax Early American before attaching to the truck body.
Ana is a master at designing plans that are easy to assemble, use standard, readily-available lumber AND functional. This truck shelf is no exception. In fact I used all scrap wood to make this beauty, check your stash because you might just have the pieces to make this today.
Who’s going to build a convoy!
The inspiration for this truck shelf came from Pottery Barn Kids truck shelf:
I might be biased but I think Ana’s version is better! Her design has sides to prevent the books from falling and an open cab area for accessories. In addition I guarantee it won’t cost $99 to build!
Be sure to get Ana’s plans here and start building your truck shelf today. We will be back next Friday with the last and final gift plan for this year! Happy Holidays buildy friends!

I saw this on Instagram back when you shared it and loved it. I'm perusing your website today and pinning some things that are inspiring me. 😉 This truck is brilliant and your version is so much better than Pottery Barn's!

Hi, This is just really cute. I would like to build 3 of them to make shelf for my son's room. One quick question, how do you make the black thing attached the headlights? Thanks so much!

Hi, Where can I buy this?
Jaime says
Hi Su, the shelf is not for sale. We are providing free plans to make it yourself.
