Christmas 2018 Home Tour

December 7, 2018

The Christmas season is here and I just can’t help myself by adding holiday touches around our home to celebrate this special time.

A warm hello to readers coming from Rhonda’s fabulous farmhouse at Hallstrom Home.  She has the most beautiful bits of neutral, farmhouse style, warm woods and tons of greenery in the perfect amounts for the holidays.  We are taking part in the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas home tour hop organized by The Happy Housie Krista and the inspiration and ideas are over the top amazing!

A snapshot of Christmas in my home including many DIY projects and decor you can make. Make Christmas special in your home with these project ideas.

In keeping with my usual methods, most of the Christmas decor in my home is DIY by combining store bought items with handmade pieces to make it interesting and different.  I hope you enjoy these DIY project ideas and take what decor you have on hand and make it your own.

So much Christmas right?!  I absolutely love seeing all the creative and unique ideas, it never gets old and these bloggers are consistently coming up with new and different ways to use items.

Christmas Family Room

We’re starting the home tour in our family room with this oversized rectangular wreath.  This wall is nearly visible all the way back to the kitchen entry so the big wreath here serves as a statement piece and I’m not too upset about the fact that I made it a little too big.

TIP #1: Mix faux greenery with real greenery.

The secret to this wreath is a combination of faux and real greenery.  Mixing the greenery creates texture and movement that you just can’t achieve from using faux greenery alone.

To create the giant rectangular wreath I constructed a wood frame using 1×4 boards screwed together with pocket holes and spray painted green.

TIP #2: Use a staple gun.

Save the floral wire for another project and use your staple gun for this wreath.  It’s 10x faster and easier because of the wood frame.  Staple the faux greenery to the wood frame, the faux acts as your base.  Be sure to fluff the branches for maximum volume.

Now add the remaining faux stems and then attach the real greenery.  Lastly attach pinecones and berries and I also added the ‘MERRY’ sign I had made last year.

Christmas Dining Room

Moving from the family room into the dining room and the ever popular tree shelf.  I finally collected enough bottle brush trees to display as a cohesive grouping, what better place for the trees than on the tree shelf!

What tiny bottle brush trees would be complete without mini gifts?  All the little presents wrapped up in fun patterns and colors add little pops in between the trees.

I built this DIY tree shelf as part of the Handbuilt Holiday series four years ago and honestly I never quite knew exactly what to display on the shelves.  And then it dawned on me when all the bottle brush trees were laying on the counter, clearly they were meant for the tree shelf!

To make the mini gifts search through your scrap wood pile for little pieces to use as the base of your gifts.  Any six-sided shape will work.  Below are the instructions on how to make mini presents using wood, cardstock and mod podge.

To complete the look tie a coordinating string around the gifts.  Super easy and even more fun, I could make a bazillion!

Christmas in the Kitchen

Moving from the dining room back into the kitchen I put a slender tree in the corner and decorated it with all the wood candy, birds, shiny sweet ornaments, snow and feathers.

I love the combination of the bright colored candies, white snow, greenery and cedar wood tree stand cover.  It’s the perfect welcoming tree as family and friends enter our home near the back door.

Behind the tree is a pretty foil print from Minted that I popped into a plywood frame.  To see this easy project click here, you can frame almost anything of any size using this method.

That concludes the home tour highlighting a few of the DIY projects for this Christmas season.  Be sure to hop on over to my friend Corey at Sawdust 2 Stitches for a truly amazing flocked tree plus she’s full of DIY wood projects you don’t want to miss.  And scroll down below for links to many more Christmas home tours.
