Arming yourself with amazing tools that can get the job done right, fast and well is truly smart thinking. Today’s tool is unique in that it transforms into three completely different tools, all of which use the same smart power base. Meet the Ridgid MegaMax:
Details on the Ridgid MegaMax brushless transformer tool with reciprocating saw and right angle drill heads using Diablo recip bits and the Bosch daredevil spade bit set.
Truly the most powerful and intelligent tool in my arsenal to date and one that transforms into three different, extremely functional tools. It all starts with the brushless 18V power base. This base pairs with any MegaMax attachment head to create an interchangeable tool system.
The power base has a heavy-duty brushless motor and is equipped with smart power which automatically identifies each attached head and configures the tool settings to match the head profiles. Let’s start with the most used of tool heads – the reciprocating saw head.
First off it’s super user friendly for easy head changes, the tool-free die-cast interface makes a secure locking mechanism with quick release button. Simply line up the arrows when placing the head into position and then twist until it locks. See it in action:
This Ridgid MegaMax reciprocating saw head is equipped with on/off orbital action for faster cutting in any setting. Also there is a sight line blower which directs debris away from the cut line so you can see exactly what you’re cutting in addition to the open shoe design.
I paired this reciprocating head with a 9″ Diablo demo demon carbide pruning and fast clean blade which features aggressive carbide tooth geometry for an unmatched 50 times longer cutting life, faster cuts and increased productivity in pruning and clean wood cutting applications.
You see clearly in the photo below these carbide blades are designed with large gullets and a strengthened, oversized blade body for fast chip removal in extreme cutting applications. In addition they are clearly marked with their application purpose so there is no confusion as to which blade to use for which type of material.
Diablo makes reciprocating saw blades in various lengths for all types of applications:
Back to the MegaMax power base you can see the LED communication panel shows the status of the tool. The green ready light is lit once the battery is engaged. The lock-on functionality allows you to lock-on the tool in chisel mode for added comfort, reduced fatigue and increased productivity (only available on select heads).
For best performance it’s recommended to use the Ridgid Octane 18V bluetooth battery with the Ridgid MegaMax power base. It’s a hyper octane battery that gives optimized performance providing 4x runtime over standard lithium-ion batteries. And it’s extra fancy enabled with bluetooth technology capable of sending over 15 different push notifications to your phone via the Ridgid octane battery app.
Changing out the head for the MegaMax right angle drill head attachment we can create one of the most powerful and intelligent right angle drills on the jobsite. I can see how this tool would quickly become an electricians best friend drilling through studs repeatedly to run wires. This is a beast of a tool weighing about 10 pounds and you can feel the high torque output, necessary for any jobsite application.
Get a good look at that beautiful, shiny chuck! It’s heavy duty and holds bits firmly during high-torque applications. The chuck key makes changing out bits seamless and with on-board storage you can always access the key.
I’m using the Bosch daredevil spade bits today for speed drilling. They are designed to deliver the fastest drilling performance possible through wood for a spade bit, up to 10X faster than conventional spade bits, but with clean hole entry and angled cutting edges for reduced blowout.
The hex shank with power groove reduces bit slippage in the drill and makes it suitable for use with a variety of drill types, including impact drills. Do not use in drill press. Also look at those clearly marked sizes!
You can see the paddle is not flat, it’s contoured on purpose which improves speed with faster chip removal. The bit is a full-cone threaded tip that pulls it through the wood, offering best-in-class speed through 2x4s. Ideal for clean-boring a lot of holes through wood fast to run conduit or pipe, these bits deliver a drilling speed and a force performance that sets them apart and that’s what you want to get the job done.
I’m looking forward to putting these Bosch spade bits to use for all my hole drilling needs, even if I’m not running pipe or conduit. And having the Ridgid MegaMax powerbase and attachment heads in my tool arsenal means I’m armed with the tools to get the job done.
