Happy Friday and one week to go until Christmas! It’s Week 11 of the Handbuilt Holiday series and Ana White and I are bringing you a wood kids play cash register.
Simply the cutest little thing and functional too! My kids proceeded to ask me “What is a charge card?” Am I that ancient? I swear they used to be called charge cards back in the day.
Anyhow if you missed any of the previous weeks gift builds be sure to see them all here.
We have 11 new gift builds up so far this year plus the 3 previous years so you are bound to find something perfect to build for that little someone.
Ana designed this cash register with a hinged top perfect for storing all those coins, credit cards and other kid collectible weird stuff.
I opted for a curved cut out piece in front which makes for less pinched fingers and a slot to slide things into the cash register.
It’s a great size, not too big or small and would be perfect in a play kitchen or market set up.
Get the complete plans from Ana’s site here. She has the supplies, cut list and step by step instructions to build your own cash register.
Down below are more details on how I finished this cash register:
Before adding the back piece attach the paper roll holders from the underside of the top shelf using glue and finish nails. It helps to clamp the pieces in position, nail in place and then let dry.
The credit card swipe slot is two pieces of 3/4″ square molding with 3/8″ space in between.
The number buttons are 3/8″ thick slices of 2×2 scrap piece.
The coins are 1/2″ thick slices of a 1 1/2″ wood dowel. Spray paint them metallic colors.
To paint the details I masked off the plywood with tape and then used acrylic paints to add color and numbers.
Such a fun project and a huge thank you to Ana for creating these plans. We still have one more gift plan next Friday before Christmas so please be sure to check back!!
