DIY Gumball Machine

March 13, 2015

diy gumball machine kids craft
Time to raid the scrap wood pile again to make this simple gumball machine.  Now technically it’s not a machine but more of a candy jar however it does make an easy craft for a kids birthday party and that is my goal here.

I used a dollar store glass vase and scrap wood painted bright red to make the gumball machine.

So colorful, so fun and it’s candy!
How to make a gumball machine:

Supplies:
  • small glass vase
  • 1×4 scrap cut @ 3 1/2″l
  • 4×4 scrap cut @ 3 1/2″l
  • 3″ flat circle wood shape
  • 1 1/2″ wood dowel cit @ 1/2″thick
  • 1″ wood ball with flat side
  • 2″ hole saw bit
  • wood glue
  • 1 1/2″ finish nails

Step 1: Cut a 2″ hole in the center of the 1×4 square piece.  This is where the glass vase will rest so be sure to check your vase to ensure a proper fit.

Step 3: Make the lid by sandwiching the 1″ wood ball, the 3″ wood circle and the 1 1/2″ wood dowel together using glue and a finish nail up through the center.  Spray paint everything the red gloss.

We assembled these at my daughter’s Willy Wonka birthday party, it made a fun craft and party favor for the girls!
