Want to build an awesome playhouse for that superhero lover? This DIY superhero playhouse is full of adventure, hiding spots, levels, doors, windows and more. Let me show you how to build this superhero playhouse.
A DIY tutorial to build a superhero playhouse. Make this portable superhero playhouse for that superhero loving kid (or adult) with these simple plans.
Ana White and I collectively designed this superhero playhouse. My son is obsessed with superheros and I wanted a playhouse to fit the superhero theme. So I drew up a little sketch and together we came up with this playhouse.
Do you have a someone in your house who loves to play with superheros? I do. But he was always looking for a place to set them up and play. After searching forever and coming up with nothing I finally decided to build my own superhero house.
Features:
- multiple levels
- ledges
- doorways
- escapes routes
- ramp
- ladder
- dungeon
Thor guarding the bad guys in the dungeon:
We needed access from all sides for multiple kids to play so there’s no backing on this superhero . You could easily add a 1/4″ plywood backing if you like.
Ana cleverly thought to add the hinges which create stability. But even with the sides open flush it’s very sturdy.
And best of all the hinges make it portable and storable for easy clean up! It’s a bit heavy for a young child to carry around but an adult can easily move the playhouse. It weighs about 17 pounds.
Ana White is a magician and together we came up with these plans that incorporate all of the above for a super functional, sturdy, safe and fun superhero playhouse.
And more recently we shared a larger, more involved superhero lair playhouse if you have a massive superhero collection or just want a bigger playhouse. Click on the photo for details and plans.
Cost breakdown:
- lumber – $30
- hardware – $10
I spent about 4 hours total building the superhero playhouse, cutting all those doorways took awhile! But it was definitely well worth it seeing as my son loves his new set up.
How to build the superhero playhouse:
Step 1: Follow Ana’s plans and make the cuts.
Step 2: Before construction cutout all doorways. I used 1 1/2″ spade bit but you could probably go up to 2″ then jigsaw the remaining doorway.
Step 3: Make all doorway cuts identical (in the 4 vertical pieces), simply trace holes onto next piece.
Add floors using pocket holes on the underside and attach the wall divider.
For the side sections attach all landings using pocket holes before adding bottom.
Add handle at the top for easy carrying and then a hook and eye latch to keep the sides shut during transport.
To make the ladder:
- Step 1: cut 3 rungs and predrill holes at both ends
- Step 2: begin with a knot, add rung, then make another knot
- Step 3: make next knot before adding the next rung
- Step 4: always knot before and after each rung to keep in place
Use a giant needle to thread jute through predrilled hole in house then tie a knot again to hold ladder in place.

Can you tell me how big the doorways are?
Jaime says
Hi Caitlin, Most of the arched doorways are 1 1/2″ wide x 3″ tall but there are a few bigger ones. I used a 1 1/2″ spade bit to make the arch but you could go up to 2″. Good luck!
